Summer Moped Rentals are Here!

School is out and it is officailly the beginning of Summer. June through August is typically the busiest time of the year for tourism in Hawaii. Which means that there are going to be a lot of people looking to rent a moped. Here are few things to remember when getting ready to ride in Honolulu.

1. Reserve in advance - You might be all right if you only need a few, but large groups have to book in advance.
2. Book online - All of our online rates are at least ten percent cheaper than our walk in rates, and it guarantees you the bike.
3. Wear Protection - The sun gets brutal this time of year and you will need sunblock!
4. Have a destination in mind - Ask one of our friendly staff to help you plan the route for you!
5. Be Adventurous - Riding a moped in Hawaii can be one of the best experiences you have on the island, so take advantage of it and get off of the beaten path.
6. Try a Self Guided Moped Tour - You can do them at your own leisure and you are given everything for the activity.

Hawaiian Style Rentals New Rack Card

Since adding the bicycles and getting rid of the scootcars we had to design a new rack card. Creating one image that shows all of our products was not that easy, but thanks to some inspiration from the pcc website I think we pulled it off pretty well. We have been working on a universal design for Hawaiian Style Rentals. It took us a while to find a pattern that gives off a Hawaiian feel and also shows the mopeds, motorcycles and bicycles. We will be incorporating this new design into our advertisements and at each of our locations. Check it out!

Pro Bowl in Hawaii

Every year we have the pleasure of experiencing the pro bowl on Oahu. One thing I know is that football players love scooters. This weekend we will be all out of mopeds and 350 pound players will be seen cruising through Waikiki and having a blast on their rentals. Guidelines to Buying a Moped in Hawaii

Being involved in the Hawaii moped industry I have created a few guidelines that you should take into consideration before purchasing a moped in Hawaii.

1. The Moped Parts Supply - Heaven forbid you get into an accident, but if you do, can they help get you and your moped back on the road.

Note: You should also take into consideration how much parts cost and where they get them from. If they are out of stock and they have to order them from the manufacturer, which is most likely overseas, then you will be waiting a long time and should probably invest in a bus pass.

2. The Moped Manufacturer - I have yet to come across a moped worth buying from China. Taiwan, Japan and Europe made mopeds are pretty solid though.

3. Warranty - A manufacturer warranty means that the problems with your moped are between you and the manufacturer, not who you bought it from. Don't count on any help. Look for companies who offer in-house warranties on their mopeds.

4. Due your due diligence - Shop around and make an educated decision. Research the possibilities and remember price should not be the main factor.

5. Don't judge a book by its cover - Just because it looks pretty does not mean it is the best on the market.

6. Invest in a Lock and Use it Every Time - People do steal mopeds in Hawaii. Every time you leave the moped lock it! Please save yourself some grief and a lot of stress.

The Moped market in Hawaii is not really big. Unlike a bicycle company where they sell 30 bikes a day, a moped dealer might average 3 or 4 sales a day, if they are lucky. Which means that this is a small business probably ran by the owner and a few employees. So you can't just trust any one you find. Follow step 4 and you will be allright. Good luck!

Hawaii Moped Photo Gallery

I have been playing with our galleries on Hawaii Moped and Hawaii Harley. I am very pleased with how user friendly it has been and believe it is going to be very useful for all of our clients. Now they can see the mopeds they are going to get before they get to Hawaii. I also posted some action shots of places you can go while in Hawaii, so people can see what they should expect.

I am also playing with the moped tours. By the end of this week we will be able to book self-guided tours online. They are going to be a lot of fun and will help us diversify a little. They are nice, because you can you can do it at your leisure and take it at your own pace.

Hawaiian Style Rentals New Location

Hawaiian Style Rentals is proud to announce the opening of another great Waikiki location. It is located directly behind the Resort Quest Waikiki Beach Hotel and the Marriott Resort and Spa at 2556 Lemon Road in the Waikiki Beachside Hostel. Doors officially open for business on December 15th 2007. Rounding off the east side of Waikiki, it will now be easier than ever to rent a moped or motorcycle from Hawaiian Style Rentals!

Activities in Hawaii

My customers always ask me what they should do while in Hawaii. I guess they ask me, because I can give an honest opinion knowing that whether or not they do what I suggest won't affect me. I only recommend activities that I enjoy and know will be mutually beneficial to my customers. And I only recommend quality vendors, ie. companies with new equipment, good customer service and punctual presentable employees.
Luaus:
To start off everyone has to do a luau. Germaines Luau and Paradise Cove are the main ones. They both offer a hawaiian buffet and a hula show with fire dancing. Alcohol is also served throughout the show. My personal favorite is the night show at the PCC (Polynesian cultural center). The only set back is no alcohol is available, because it's owned by the LDS church.
Beaches:
During the day I love to get out of Waikiki. I take my visiting family to the Kahala Mandarin Hotel. Only a ten minute moped drive up the coast the five star hotel is home of the DolphinQuest and a less crowded private beach with waiters serving drinks to you while you sunbathe. With so many beautiful beaches to go to I just tell people to follow the coast around Kaneohe Bay and toward the North Shore.
Snorkeling:
I go to Hanauma Bay on the east side of the island. Gear is available on the beach and it's a $5 entry, because it's a nature preserve. It's closed on Tuesdays. Hawaii’s sun and the physical activity required to snorkel will wear you out. Expect to sleep early that night!
Hiking:
There are so many nice places on Oahu to hike that it’s hard to pin point the best. Checkout Backyard Oahu. They have detailed breakdowns on 84 of Oahu's hiking trails.
Pearl Harbor:
It is required as an American to pay your respect and visit Pearl Harbor. Don't do any tours, because you can drive there get the same experience and you are free to leave when you like.
Circle Island Tours:
When it comes to the circle island tours I think they are pretty cool. They are relatively inexpensive, you learn a lot, the tour guides are really knowledgable of the the Hawaiian culture and exemplify the spirit of Aloha.

Where to take your moped on Oahu

Every customer wants to know where they can go with the mopeds on Oahu. This map is a work in progress, so I wll be updating it regularly. Phil Fischer Riding a Harley Davidson in Hawaii

It's not every day we get celebrities as famous as Phil Fischer renting motorcycles from us. Phil Fischer is the only artist in history to go Gold and Platinum without any label support or radio ad. Phil thought taking out our Harley Davidson Fat Boy for a few days would fulfill his sense of adventure while visiting Oahu. A very approachable person Phil asked me to shoot some pictures of him, because "all [his] friends are at home working while [he's] in Hawaii." Here is a cool song he sent to me by his band the thexboxboys.com called "Master Chief mp3". It's about the game Halo 3. Surfing Lessons + Moped Cruising = The Perfect Hawaiian Day

Other than renting a moped every person must try surfing when visiting Hawaii. With such a high demand for lessons one must book them very far in advance and be aware of who they are putting themselves in the water with. We visited DCX Surf School today and were so happy with them we felt they were worth writing a blog post about. It is owned and operated by Eric Lillmars, the chillest guy I have met in Hawaii. Fully insured, certified and trained he made me feel very safe and I was able to stand up within minutes. After the affordable surf lesson he offered to take us out to lunch and we ended up going to see the waves on the North Shore to shoot some photos, because he is also a professional photographer. Only in Hawaii Can You Look Cool on a Moped!

Only in Hawaii is it cool to ride a moped. I was taken aback when I saw that a large amount of locals own them. It makes sense though. Year round the weather is in the mid 80's, when it rains it's not for that long, the island takes 5 hours to completely circle, they can be parked anywhere, insurance is not required, the speed limits on most streets are only 35 mph, and they get 80 miles to the gallon. It only looks like mopeds are going to become more popular!

GoCars San Francisco

I recently took a trip to San Francisco and decided to check out
GoCar Tours San Francisco . A GoCar is a GPS guided scootcar that guides you through the city. The GoCar made driving around San Francisco really entertaining.

You put on some dorky helmets and hop into a miniature talking convertible and conquer the steep hills and brisk weather of the San Francisco streets. While passing each scenic point the GoCar tells you what it is and the history behind it. I could easily hear the lady on the speakers and I did not get lost once. I made it all the way to the Golden Gate Bridge! A bit pricy but worth it the GoCar made my visit to San Francisco one to remember.

Hawaii Water Sports

There is nothing better than cruising along the Hawaiian coast and making a stop for some bumper tubing. Check out Hawaii Water Sports Center. They offer activities like jet skiing, wakeboarding parasailing and my favorite bumper tubing. Perfect for a small group a tube is pulled behind a speed boat in the Koko Marina while you try to hold on.

Hawaii Moped Laws

Prerequisites to Driving the Moped:
-Driver must be at least 15 years old with a permit. With an out of state license the driver must be 18 with a valid drivers license.

Driving the Mopeds on the Roads:
- You must face forward while you are driving. No standing on the floor board it's a $97 ticket.
- Only one person on a moped at a time. Another $97 ticket for the driver and passenger.
- If traffic is too fast get as far to the right as safely possible or drive in the bike lane. Remember safety first.
- Mopeds must be driven in a single file line.
- No moped is allowed on a sidewalk or any other area permitted solely for pedestrians.

Additional Recommendations:
- Always wear a helmet. It only takes one car not looking over there shoulder as they change lanes.
- Always wear closed-toed shoes and preferrably pants. Nothing else protecting you from some road rash.
- If it is raining take the bus. The moped will come out from under you if you have to brake fast. If you have to go out in the rain ride very cautiously and keep distance with other vehicles.

What to search for when renting a moped

When renting a moped there are certain guidelines that must be followed. Sure it may seem an easy task but renting an unmaintained scooter and having it break down will definitely ruin one of your precious days on your vacation. So here are a list of prerequisites that a moped must pass to be "rentable".

1. Does it have all of it's parts?
It is surprising how many moped rentals there are on the road without mirrors.

2. Are the tires in good condition?
The pressure should be no less that 25 psi and there should ALWAYS be tread on them.

3. Are the panels in good condition?
If not imagine what the engine must be like.

4. Do the turn signals work?
Good luck hand signaling while trying to find your way around.

5. Does the bike ride straight?
Most companies will not allow anyone to test drive their bikes, but before signing your life away at least spin the front tire and make sure the rim's not wobbly.

6. Does it have enough oil?
It's all about lubrication.

7. Is it clean underneath the seat?
The storage beneath the seat is very important and needs to be neat. Imagine renting a car with trash in the trunk. How tacky!

8. Last but not least what year is the moped?
If it is older than a year don't waste your time. Unlike a car, 20,000 miles on a moped means it's on its last breaths.

A moped is not a toy. It has to be maintained regularly and like anything else requires some TLC to properly perform. So always inspect what you are getting before you sign. Have fun!
